Yes, you can write UGC NET without completing your master’s degree. You just have to be a master’s student. Example: A semester one student in an MA English class can appear for the exam.
Yes, you can. But it depends on the rules of the university. Some universities let you write their PhD entrance exams and let you appear for the synopsis presentation based on your entrance score. In such cases, UGC NET/JRF is not mandatory. Some universities let you appear directly for the synopsis presentation if you are qualified for UGC NET/JRF. In some other universities, JRF is mandatory. Anyway, it is always safe for you to have NET/JRF cleared.
NET certificate is valid for lifetime. But JRF is valid only for three years. However, recently UGC has announced that JRF will be valid for four years, considering the delays caused by Covid-19.
The exam is divided into two papers.
Paper 1 is a general paper. Paper 2 is based on your subject. Example: English
Total of three hours allotted for the candidate. The candidate can attend the questions in any order from any paper.
Total of 150 questions will be asked for the exam. Paper 1 consists of 50 questions and paper 2 will consist of 100 questions ( there is no negative marks )
Though it is difficult to say which is the most important portion in UGC NET/JRF examination, one can understand from the previous year question papers that areas like British literature, literary and cultural theory gets more prominence. Check out the syllabus in our website to know different areas from which questions could be asked for the exam.
